To celebrate International Women’s Day, we sat down with our creative director Kendall Falcon to gain some insight from a woman’s perspective in the world of fashion design. See our interview below to see what keeps Kendall motivated in her work and home life, her views on gender equality & more.

How are you celebrating International women’s day?
Today I plan to stay home with my partner and take the day on in whatever way makes me feel comfortable. I will call the special women in my life and tell them that I love them and thank them for their love, kindness and guidance — as I wouldn’t be who I am today without them.

How have you found being a woman, working in the fashion industry to be like?
Like any woman in any industry, I have seen struggle but I’ve also seen opportunity and support. There’s this perception that the fashion industry is cut-throat and wildly competitive, and there is absolutely some truth there. However, what I’ve seen over the years is that the old ways are on there way out and there’s a new wave of exciting minds being more collaborative and bringing more empathy into their work. It’s an exciting time in fashion right now where there’s more of a singular goal to make the world a better place, and people are finally paying attention. What I’ve learned is that competitive nature will only take you so far. You have to work in a team and support your peers because they become your allies.

What does gender equality mean to you?
That all humans deserve the same level of respect, opportunity and visibility.

What do you do to stay encouraged and motivated in both your daily life & work life?
For me it’s a balance of finding new ways to approach my work and identifying when I really need to give myself a break. I know that sometimes I overwork myself and feel it start to consume my personal/home life. Sometimes it feels like most of my time is spent staring at screens. It’s imperative that I make time to decompress, digitally disconnect and work with my hands.

What advice would you give younger women wanting to pursue their passion in the fashion industry/design?
Don’t second guess yourself and don’t get too comfortable. Of course, this is easier said than done, and I am still learning this balance every single day. But working incredibly hard is only part 1. To move forward in your passion you can’t let self-doubt and fear hold you back. Even when you feel that you are in good place in your career, stay clear of complacency and always challenge yourself to get out of your comfort zone and learn more.

If you could say anything to your younger self what would it be?
If I could look 10 years ago me right in the eyes, I would tell her that ‘Your instincts are always right. There will be many times where you may not feel respected but don’t keep quiet because you’re worried that your ideas or your voice may not be valued. When you push for what you want in this world and prioritize showing respect to others, you’ll find yourself where you want to be.’
